7 Airsoft Accessories and Essentials You Didn’t Know You Needed (And Some You Did)
After you get your first airsoft gun and some protective gear, cut your teeth in an airsoft match, and meet some airsoft buddies, you start to learn from experience.
Experientia docet – or experience teaches, as they say. There are a few things you can learn from other players in the field and on forums, about what sorts of airsoft accessories you should carry and what maintenance or mods you should perform.
Still, it helps to have the insight of others even as you learn along the way.
Here are some things we learned were essential airsoft accessories. Some of them you may have known you needed already, others perhaps not.
1. Battery chargers
Obviously, you need a battery charger to charge and fire any electric gun. We know you know you need it – our advice is to take one with you to a match, along with a spare battery as well, actually.
The reason is this: though some airsoft batteries might be long-lasting, the time to find out your battery is low on life is not the morning of a match, especially if you are hours away from home.
So, don’t just have a battery charger. Bring one with you to every match for which you need to travel.
2. Spare gas/batteries
By the way, if you shoot a GBB airsoft gun (and who doesn’t, at least as a sidearm) you should also carry spare gas canisters with you to matches. Keep them in your vest.
You might also want to keep a spare battery for the same reason. You can’t charge a battery if you’re literally in a match, but you might be able to swap one out.
3. Speedloaders
We wish we could say this was a suggestion, but it really isn’t. It’s frustrating but possible to load low-cap airsoft pistol mags by hand with loose BBs. It’s not possible with larger AEG mags.
Keep a speedloader in your vest at all times.
4. Silicone oil
Silicone oil is a really effective lubricant (although it is not the only type) and it does not cause plastic degradation like hydrocarbon-based (oil-based) lubricants.
Keep a little bit of silicone oil on hand and apply it to o-rings and metal-on-metal parts (but not the hop-up or barrel) after you’ve cleaned the airsoft gun. It will help limber up the works and protect them as well, while also keeping plastic/rubber parts from drying out and cracking.
5. A set of screwdriver bits/socket bits (plus a multitool)
Most airsoft guns can be disassembled with small screwdriver bits – you’ll need small Torx, Phillips, and hex bits, and perhaps sockets as well.
If you’re going to maintain, mod, or clean your airsoft guns at home – and you should definitely at least clean them, a good set is a must.
Also, keep a multi-tool in your pocket for quick in-the-field maintenance.
6. Isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol)
For the purpose of cleaning your airsoft gun at home, keep some strong rubbing alcohol on hand. Use it to strip away grease and dirt from metal parts.
One word of caution, though. Do not use alcohol on plastic or rubber parts. It will cause cracking and premature breakdown of many polymers.
7. Tactical gloves
You knew you needed protective eyewear, but a good pair of tactical gloves will protect your hands in a match, both from abrasive environments and from hostile fire. Let’s face it – a BB on a knuckle hurts a lot, especially at close range.
